Christmas Lights at Grands Vaux Raise £1,536.85 for Jersey Cancer Relief

Wednesday, January 13th 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic may have threatened to spoil Christmas for islanders, but thanks to the enormous efforts and generosity of John, Derek and Pam at Whiteley Close in Grands Vaux that festive Christmas feeling was made available to many people with their fantastic Christmas lights display.

There was no missing the house lit up by thousands of lights and as well as a mask-wearing Santa overseeing it all there were a lot of fun pieces at children’s’ eye level for them to enjoy the Christmas magic.

It was also a wonderful opportunity for those islanders who have been shielding most of the year to be able to see it from the safety of a car and enjoy a little bit of Christmas.

The funds were presented to Anne Pryke, Chair of Jersey Cancer Relief and now the counting is finished we have an amazing total of £1.536.85.

John Hammon along with Derek & Pam Cauvain whose home it is, have worked so hard once again and given up their free time to produce this fantastic display at their own cost.   For the past fifteen years they have spent all of November putting all the lights in place and then dismantling in January.

Next Christmas they hope to have an even better display so if people have any large decorations or lights they would be willing to donate to help them achieve this please contact JCR. Rumour has it that Santa may even have a sleigh for photo opportunities next time !

In such a strange year efforts that brighten life such as this are much appreciated and brought a lot of joy and cheer to all islanders who visited and of course raised vital funds for the charity in a year when fundraising opportunities and awareness raising were minimal.

Jersey Cancer Relief pay out of over £4,000 weekly as well as the salary of a gynae cancer specialist nurse at the hospital and smear test funding.  All donations stay in the island and are used to support local cancer patients with their doctors’ bills, heating costs, dressings, airfares to UK for treatment, medical equipment and food supplements.  If you are a cancer patient who may need financial help, or you know of someone, please call Jersey Cancer Relief on 618148 for more details.

A very big Thank You to John, Derek and Pam and to everyone who visited to support this wonderful Christmas display, see you again next Christmas!
